Background
ASHA has had a longstanding commitment to making effective communication accessible and achievable for all by increasing representation within the Communication Sciences and Disorders (CSD) discipline. To make that happen, ASHA has invested in reaching students early and showing them what’s possible in audiology and speech-language pathology careers.
In 2021, ASHA relaunched the Hearing and Speech Careers microsite with a simple message: Representation Matters. The updated site features story-driven content with actual students and professionals, clear explanations of audiology and speech-language pathology career paths, and practical steps for getting started. ASHA initially promoted the site through social media, digital marketing, and counselor outreach. The response was strong—a 284% increase in site users—and the campaign’s video series earned a 2022 ASAE Silver EXCEL Award.
From 2024–2025, ASHA expanded its digital marketing campaign to reach students where they are—on Connected TV, TikTok, Instagram, and through paid search. These campaigns delivered over 6.3 million impressions. A separate fall 2025 campaign reached key influencers, like school counselors, world language teachers, and academic advisors, with more than 2.1 million ads served over three months.
ASHA also strengthened outreach efforts and traffic to the microsite, by partnering with CSD programs, NSSLHA chapters, members, and organizations to introduce students to CSD career options through in-person events, poster distribution, presentations, and organizational advertising. As part of ASHA’s Centennial Celebration, members gave presentations and attended career fairs in middle and high schools around the county, reaching almost 10,000 students! Moreover, staff and volunteers represented ASHA at major events such as the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) Convention, the Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) International Leadership Conference, the National Career Development Association (NCDA) Conference, and the National Society of High School Scholars (NSHSS) Scholars Day events—connecting with thousands of students and families who showed strong interest in CSD professions and distributing career kits and recruitment materials for further exploration.
